Box 93042
Des Moines, IA 50393

May 3, 2010

The Honorable Jan Brewer
Governor of Arizona
1700 West Washington
Phoenix, Arizona 85007

Dear Hon. Jan Brewer,

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Any way I can get an autographed photo?

I realize a lot of people are pretty upset with you for signing S.B. 1070 "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act" into law, but what did these people expect you to do? Veto the bill? Like you could do that! It would be anarchy if Governors had this power!

I'm sure you will agree this is a sad time for Arizona, what with the economic boycotts and people refusing to send their children to Arizona's Universities, but so what! If we continue to allow life to be easy in these United States more immigrants will want to live here! And if people decide to keep their kids home from school that's their loss. Who needs an education?

You've publicly stated that this law will be enforced civilly, fairly, and without discrimination, which brings up a concern. My grandmother is a resident of your state and is quite elderly. I am uncertain what documentation I need to bring with me in the event she dies or becomes gravely ill. Is my Iowa driver's license sufficient, or should I bring along my birth certificate? I'd hate to be deported to Norway, since I don't even speak the language!

Sincerely,

Christopher L. Jorgensen

She didn't respond.Christopher L. It opens the door to the 'forbidden' racial profiling - something that will be practiced with great gusto in Maricopa county by the minions of Sheriff Arpaio (apologies if I spelled his name wrong - all those white guys look and sound the same to me).

To say that profiling won't take place is hubris - and an outright lie. The law will be an opportunity for racist pressure to be applied to a vulnerable sector of the populace who need more laws to protect them rather than opening up opportunities to single out people because of their skin color and possible country of origin.

The passage - and enactment - of this piece of legislation shall go down as a blotch on the history of the United States - yet another blotch on a history replete with blotches and blemishes stretching back through time.

Remember, the phrase 'the ugly American' doesn't exist out of chance.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14917517595461617547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19864416.post-42694730123593167042010-06-10T11:57:46.443-04:002010-06-10T11:57:46.443-04:00Thanks for delineating this law's supporters a...Thanks for delineating this law's supporters and their ties. When the president calls a governor to account for a rogue law, I'd hope the citizenry would wake up and see how egregious the law is and how broken the thought processes here must be. These are some scary folks you've listed here! -- Peter Burris (@harperpb)PeterBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13085737949344384991noreply@blogger.com
